South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj was overcome with emotion and broke down in tears after winning the 2025 World Test Championship at Lord’s. Backed by Aiden Markram’s brilliant century and Temba Bavuma’s gritty fifty, the Proteas ended a 27-year wait for an ICC title. For Maharaj, the moment was especially poignant, having witnessed South Africa endure decades of heartbreak in major tournaments.

South Africa ended their 27-year-long wait for an ICC title as they got their hands on the World Test Championship mace after beating Australia in the 2025 final. The Proteas chased down the second-highest target at Lord’s and the highest in an ICC final as they hunted down 282 in the fourth innings with five wickets in hand. 

South Africa broke India’s 14-year-old world record to win their maiden ICC title in 27 years. The Temba Bavuma-led side produced a sensational performance at the Lord’s to beat Australia by five wickets and win the third edition of the World Test Championship (WTC). In doing so, South Africa now registered the biggest chase by a team in an ICC final.

South Africa ended their long wait for an ICC title as they defeated the mighty Aussies in the World Test Championship 2025 final on Saturday, June 14. On the back of a match-winning century from Aiden Markram, the Proteas chased down 282 in the fourth innings at Lord’s to win their first ICC title after 27 years.

1999, 2003, 2015, 2022, 2024 – South Africa have witnessed heartbreaks like no other cricketing nation. They were called the ‘chokers’ for several years before Temba Bavuma’s men produced an extraordinary show at Lord’s to win their maiden ICC title in 27 years. In the World Test Championship finale against Australia, the Proteas were not considered the favourites, especially as their batting unit wasn’t tested enough but regardless, South Africa managed to get over the line, winning by five wickets.

With the start of the five-match Test series against England a little away, the Indian team has been gearing up for the crucial assignment with an intra-squad game against India A. Several Test series-bound players were not in the A squad for the practice games against England Lions, and this four-day game stands as the only chance for them to get into the Test groove after the two-month-long IPL.

Former Australia international Matthew Hayden wasn’t impressed with Pat Cummins’ leadership in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at the Lord’s. Defending 282 runs in the fourth innings, Australia picked up two quick wickets of Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder, but they failed to capitalise on that. Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma took control of the ship and bailed the Proteas out of trouble.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) recently came forward and announced a huge change to the law relating to the catches taken near the boundary rope. With the new set of rules announced, an airborne fielder can only touch the ball once when he is beyond the boundary rope. After the first touch, the fielder will need to come inside the field to complete the catch.

South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma have been brilliant for their side in the second innings of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) 2025. Both batters have built a solid partnership, helping their side race towards the title, putting Australia in a perplexing situation.
