The Air India Flight AI171 crashed minutes after its takeoff from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing 241 of the 242 passengers onboard. The Flight, which took off at 1:38 PM on June 12, crashed into the mess of the BJ Medical College.

In the wake of the tragic Air India Dreamliner crash in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad, where flight AI 171 went down shortly after takeoff, a breakthrough has been confirmed- the aircraft’s black box has been recovered from the rooftop of a medical college hostel in Meghani Nagar. According to Nitin Jadhav, National President of the Council of Indian Aviation, the black box data is expected to offer crucial insights into the cause of the accident.

In the wake of recurring technical issues, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a stringent directive on Friday (June 13) for enhanced safety checks on Air India’s Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft. The new protocol will come into effect from Sunday (June 15) at midnight.

Authorities have recovered the flight data recorder, commonly known as the ‘black box’, from the roof of the hostel building (crash site) of Air India flight AI171, said the civil aviation ministry on Friday (June 13). The aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had departed from Ahmedabad airport en route to London Gatwick when it tragically crashed just minutes after takeoff.

Akash Vatsa, a passenger who travelled aboard the same Boeing 787 Dreamliner just hours before it was involved in the Air India flight AI171 crash from Ahmedabad to London, shared his experience with the media on Friday (June 13). Vatsa flew on the aircraft from Delhi to Ahmedabad and reported observing certain irregularities during the journey.

The Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner plane crash is one of the deadliest tragedies in aviation history. 241 out of 242 aboard the plane died, and the lone survivor was a British national of Indian origin.  The 13-year-old plane took off from Ahmedabad for London with 242 passengers, including 2 pilots and 10 crew members, and after going up to a height of 190 meters, crashed into a medical college hostel within 40 seconds, turning into a fiery ball. Five persons, including doctors from the medical college, died and nearly 30 others were injured.

Nirali Patel, who was the only Canadian national, in the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday that claimed the lives of 241 people onboard the flight was an Indian-origin dentist.
